Pie and Mash is a traditional London dish and it has been in London since the 19th century. Traditionally pie and mash shops have white or green tile walls, with marble or wooden tables which gives Victorian appearance.
The main dish ‘Pie and Mash’ is a minced beef and cold water pastry pie and mash potatoes. It is common for the mashed potato to be spread around one side of the plate and the dish is covered with a liberal amount of parsley sauce- Liquor, salt and also vinegar. Chilli-vinegar (vinegar containing pickled chillies) is also traditionally served with this dish.
Jellied or stewed eels are another London speciality often sold in pie and mash shops. In the early days, these eels were caught locally in the river Thames.
